The Recyclability of Keurig Green Mountain Coffee Pods

In September 2020, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Keurig Green Mountain for allegedly misleadingly marketing that its single-serve plastic coffee pods are recyclable when, according to plaintiffs, such claims are not true. According to the complaint, it is not economical for recycling facilities in most communities to sort the pods as the foil needs to be separated from the plastic, the pods have a tendency to be crushed or mangled, and the pods may be contaminated from coffee grounds. (Downing et al v. Keurig Green Mountain, Inc., Case No. 20-cv-11673, D. Mass.)
