Nature’s Bounty’s Black Cohosh Dietary Supplement

2015: A class-action lawsuit was filed against Nature’s Bounty for allegedly falsely advertising its Black Cohosh 540 mg dietary supplement. The complaint, which was later amended in March 2017, alleges that the company misleadingly markets the dietary supplement as being:

  • “natural” and “non-synthetic” when, according to the complaint, the supplement contains a synthetic ingredient (magnesium stearate);
  • made with “only the finest quality herbs and spices” when, according to plaintiffs, the supplement contains unsafe levels of lead; and
  • a remedy for symptoms of menopause – such as hot flashes, night sweats, and mild mood changes – without adequate scientific evidence to support such claims.
