Samsung Televisions and Geek Squad Protection Plans

January 2019: The claims against Best Buy were dismissed for failure to state a claim.

2018: A class-action lawsuit was filed against Samsung Electronics and Best Buy stores regarding the marketing of Samsung Plasma televisions and Geek Squad Protection Plans. The complaint, which was originally filed in February and amended in November, alleges that Best Buy fails to clearly and conspicuously state that its Geek Squad Protection Plans that consumers can purchase for various products – including Samsung televisions – are “limited” warranties and not full warranties. Plaintiffs also claim that the Samsung Plasma televisions are defective and the company does not have an adequate supply of replacement parts to repair them. (Ware et al v. Samsung Electronics America, Inc. and Best Buy Stores, L.P. et al, Case No. 18-cv-886, N. D. IL.)
