MLM Companies Income Claims

Between June and November 2023, TINA.org investigated 100 Multilevel Marketing – a way of distributing products or services in which the distributors earn income from their own retail sales and from retail sales made by their direct and indirect recruits. companies, which included all DSA-member companies as of June 1, and found that 98 percent used atypical and unsubstantiated income claims to promote the companies’ business opportunities. Cumulatively, TINA.org catalogued more than 2,000 instances of deceptive income claims across the 100 MLM companies.

This investigation follows TINA.org’s 2017 DSA Income Claims Investigation, which found that more than 97 percent of DSA member companies at that time were making atypical income claims. In the intervening five years, DSA membership has declined from 140 companies to 93 companies as of June 1, 2023. As such, to increase the sampling size, TINA.org investigated 7 additional – and prominent – MLM companies that were not DSA members as of June 1. (Note: the addition of the 7 non-DSA member companies did not significantly impact TINA.org’s statistical findings.)
