In February 2017, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Toyota for allegedly deceptively promoting a “tire savings event.” According to the complaint, Toyota represents that consumers who purchase three tires at regular price get a fourth tire for $1 when, in reality, the regular price of the tires was increased above their normal selling price so consumers were not really getting the represented discount. For example, the named plaintiff was offered three tires at $173 each plus one at $1 when the regular price of the tires before the promotion was $149.30. (Presti et al v. Toyota Motor Sales (U.S.A.), Inc., and Colonial Imports Corp., d/b/a Toyota of Nashua, Case No. 17-cv-10320, D. MA.)
