Allegations: Deceptively using slack-filled boxes
In December 2018, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Tootsie Roll Industries for allegedly representing that Tootsie Rolls and Tootsie Pops were safe when, according to plaintiffs, the candies contained partially hydrogenated oil (PHO), an unsafe food additive that causes cardiovascular disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease, until 2016. (Beasley et al v. Tootsie Roll Industries, Inc., Case No. 18-cv-7724, N.D. Cal.)
