In January 2020, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Purell for allegedly falsely advertising Purell Advanced Hand Sanitizers. Plaintiffs claim that the company misleadingly advertises that the hand sanitizers “[k]ill[] more than 99.99% of most common germs” to make consumers believe that the products can prevent disease and reduce illnesses – including Ebola, MRSA, norovirus, and the flu – when, according to the complaint, there is no evidence to support such claims. The complaint also alleges that the company markets that product without FDA approval. (Aleisa et al v. Gojo Industries, Inc. d/b/a Purell, Case No. 20-cv-1045, C.D. Cal.)
