March 2019: A class-action lawsuit was filed against Spark Energy for allegedly using a bait-and-switch marketing scheme in which it lures consumers to switch to their electricity supplier by offering a low rate for a specific number of months followed by a competitive market rate when, according to the complaint, the company charges market rates that are higher than the rates of other electricity suppliers. In addition, plaintiffs claim that Spark Energy charges them undisclosed monthly administrative fees. (Harty et al v. Spark Energy, LLC, Case No. 19-cv-2151, N.D. Ill.)
