In September 2019, a class-action lawsuit was filed against H&R Block for allegedly misleadingly advertising its “Free Online” product to make taxpayers think that using the product would allow them to file their taxes pursuant to the IRS’s Free File Program for lower-income taxpayers when, according to plaintiffs, taxpayers who use the product end up paying fees. The complaint also alleges that H&R Block hid access to the IRS Free File Program. (Swanson et al v.
