
FTC Seeks to Crack Down on Rampant Fake Reviews and Bogus Testimonials

2019: A class-action lawsuit was filed against Extra Space Storage for allegedly engaging in a deceptive bait-and-switch marketing scheme in which it offers competitive rental rates for its storage units and represents that the rates only increase to meet “rising costs” without adequately disclosing that the rental rates increase shortly after consumers sign leases and the increases are to generate additional profit. The complaint was originally filed in January 2019 and amended in March 2019. (Johnson et al v. Extra Space Storage Inc., Case No. RG19004671, California State Court – Alameda)
