Kourtney Kardashian’s ‘Microneedling’ Session with Dr. Jason Diamond

Most doctors wouldn’t tolerate the use of social media by patients in the middle of a medical procedure. But most doctors don’t have deals with their patients.

Kourtney Kardashian has one with her Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, Dr. Jason Diamond, which explains how she got away with firing off this Instagram story (sans disclosure) earlier this month, when she documented a “microneedling” session straight from the exam chair. Kourtney made sure to superimpose Dr. Diamond’s handle (@drjasondiamond) over the video, in which she tells her more than 58 million Instagram followers:

Hi guys, starting my week with Dr. Diamond’s microneedling and PRP with my own blood.

As described by Dr. Diamond himself, microneedling is a procedure through which “a hundred thousand little holes” are poked in the skin to “stimulate a little trauma.” Eventually, Dr. Diamond says, the skin is able “to regenerate and repair itself naturally, creating smoother, brighter, healthier, younger-looking skin.” PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma and is an injection treatment said to “improve facial wrinkles … using the patient’s own blood.”

Kourtney doesn’t dispense with these details in the Instagram story. Nor does she divulge any of the potential side effects of either treatment, which for microneedling include hyperpigmentation and scarring.

Two years ago, when Kourtney’s little sister, Kim, failed to mention any of the potential side effects of the morning sickness drug Diclegis in an Instagram post touting the product, she was forced to post a #CorrectiveAd that, among other things, noted that the drug may cause severe drowsiness. The FDA had warned the drug’s maker with which Kim had an endorsement deal:

The social media post is false or misleading in that it presents efficacy claims for DICLEGIS, but fails to communicate any risk information associated with its use …

Kourtney won’t meet the same fate as Kim because the Instagram story has already expired.

However, another influencer with ties to Dr. Diamond is currently facing heat from another federal agency. The FTC has given model and actress Amber Rose until Sept. 30 to tell the agency whether she has a material connection to the celebrity doctor and, if she does, how she plans to adequately disclose this Instagram as a paid endorsement:

Find more of our coverage on When an individual (or cute pet) promotes a good or service, primarily on social media, because they were paid to do so, or because of a material connection between the person (or pet) and the company here.
