Koppy Motors Scratch Ticket Scam

A big, flashy, casino-style scratch ticket arrives in the mail, and if you’re like most people, you have the urge to try your luck. Except, there is no luck to be had, as one TINA.org reader recently found out. Winning on the scratcher actually meant losing time, and the cost of gas money it took to get down to the car dealership to claim the fictitious prize.

The scratch ticket in question

Koppy Motors, based out of Michigan, sent this flashy “chance to win,” to consumers. But when our reader made the trek to the dealership, she said she was told to repeat the win on a larger board in a back room, only this time, you guessed it, no such luck.

This is a fairly common tactic utilized by car dealerships to get people through the door. The dealerships play the numbers game, by offering the promotional ticket win to as many people as possible and getting them to “take a peek” at the goods being peddled by their salespeople.

TINA.org reached out to Minnesota-based Koppy Motors to ask why they didn’t disclose that consumers would have to try their luck twice in order to win, if that is even possible.  We haven’t heard back.

If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Read more about car dealerships here.
