Twitter Apologizes for Fake Tweets Used in Ads

In a move reminiscent of the Facebook flap over user images in sponsored posts, Twitter is under fire for using fake tweets from real users to promote a new ad platform. In this recent social media flap, Twitter completely faked tweets from real people, and then apologized after it was uncovered by an SFGate blog. Facebook used images of real users without their knowledge in sponsored posts, but the Facebook users at least liked a page for the company or a product advertised. The tweets from real users of Twitter praised television commercials, surprising and upsetting the users who never sent the tweets. Facebook’s use of ads featuring members’ images prompted a class-action lawsuit. Will Twitter users follow suit?
