September 2016: The settlement was granted final approval.

May 2016: A state court judge preliminarily approved a settlement agreement in which Philip Morris agreed to pay a total of $15,273,815 ($4,942,500 in statutory damages plus $10,331,315 in prejudgment interest). For more information, go to http://malightssettlement.com/.

February 2016: A state court judge found that Philip Morris deceptively marketed Marlboro Lights, in violation of Massachusetts state law, but found that plaintiffs did not prove a specific measure of damages with reasonable certainty.

1998: A class-action lawsuit was filed against Philip Morris alleging that the company falsely represented that Marlboro Lights cigarettes were less harmful and delivered less tar and nicotine than Regular Marlboros when such claims were not true. (Geanacopoulos et al v. Philip Morris USA, Inc., Case No. 98-6002, Massachusetts Superior Court)
