January 2015: A false advertising class-action lawsuit was filed against LinkedIn, a business-oriented social networking service, for allegedly using the name and photos of members without their permission in order to persuade other existing members to upload their external email address contacts. According to the complaint, LinkedIn misleadingly uses the names and photos in emails inviting existing users to “join” some of their contacts and upload their email address contacts when, in reality, the company does not have permission to use the names and photos and invites them to “join” many members who have not uploaded their contacts. (Lea et al v. LinkedIn Corporation, Case No. 15-cv236, N. D. CA.).
