Popular Mechanics, Good Housekeeping Amazon ‘Guest House’ Facebook Ads

The following sponsored Facebook posts by Popular Mechanics and Good Housekeeping, captured last week, feature photos of a “guest house” available for purchase on Amazon.

Yet neither of the homes pictured is the one discussed in the actual articles on the publications’ websites.

But wait, there’s more.

According to the Amazon listing linked in the articles, both of which were published more than four years ago, in May 2019, the house is “[c]urrently unavailable” and Amazon says it doesn’t “know when or if th[e] item will be back in stock.” And while both publications’ sponsored posts and articles indicate that the house can be “built” in eight hours, the listing says that the “estimated assembly time” is 1-2 days for two adults.

It’s also unclear what role, if any, Amazon had in the publication of the Facebook ads and/or articles, which contain easy-to-miss disclaimers regarding commissions earned from affiliate links.

TINA.org reached out to Hearst, which publishes both Good Housekeeping and Popular Mechanics, for comment. Check back for updates.
