King Curtis speaks for us all in this viral clip from ABC’s “Wife Swap” when, in defiance of his surrogate mother, he declares: Bacon is good for me.

Don’t take our bacon away from us, Joy. And pork producers, don’t claim your products are ethically raised to “a higher standard” when you can’t prove that they come from pigs raised in a more ethical manner than conventional products.

In a decision posted this week, the National Advertising Division found third-party animal welfare audits provided by Hatfield Quality Meats insufficient to support the pork producer’s labeling claim that its products are “Ethically Raised by Family Farmers Committed to a Higher Standard of Care, Governed by Third Party Animal Welfare Audits.”

NAD recommended that Hatfield discontinue the claim and the Pennsylvania-based company — which for its part worked with an animal welfare expert to develop some of its facilities, according to the press release — said it would comply with the decision.

The nonprofit Animal Welfare Institute challenged the advertising with NAD.
