Debt collection complaints were the top consumer reported fraud in 2016, according to a new report by the FTC. They comprised 28 percent, or about 850,000 of all 3.1 million complaints reported to the Consumer Sentinel Network.
If you get a call from a debt collector, be wary of these deceptive claims:
Consumers who feel they are being abused or subject to deceptive debt-collection practices can file a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372). Consumers also can alert TINA.org here.
