The U.S. Department of Education (ED), which was created in 1980, is divided into several different offices.  One of its offices, the Office of Inspector General (OIG), is charged with identifying, auditing, and investigating fraud, waste, and abuse relating to programs and operations associated with the ED.

Together with the FTC, the OIG works to combat fraud relating to student scholarships, grants, and loans, which can sometimes be in the form of ads.  The OIG also invites anyone who suspects education fraud to report it to the OIG Hotline.
