The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (commonly referred to as TTB) is a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury that was established in 2003. In addition to collecting federal excise taxes on alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and ammunition, TTB is also responsible for assuring compliance with federal tobacco and alcohol labeling and marketing requirements.
Specifically, TTB’s Market Compliance Office is responsible for ensuring that alcohol labels and advertisements comply with the Federal Alcohol Administration (FAA) Act and regulations. According to TTB’s website, it does this, in part, by investigating complaints it receives regarding advertisements. TTB also monitors alcohol beverages in the market place and educates the general public on relevant laws and regulations.
With respect to the advertising of tobacco products, the only law that TTB enforces is a prohibition against lottery features, and indecent or immoral material being attached to tobacco product packages.
