September 2012: Despite denying the allegations against it, Intelius Identity Protect (IDP) is paying $5 million to settle claims that it tricked its customers into signing-up for an identity protection service. Specifically, the lawsuit alleges that IDP was initially a free service, but then automatically converted to a paid subscription unless the customer cancelled the service.
