Benefiber Prebiotic Powders
Allegations: False natural claims
In August 2020, a class-action lawsuit was filed against GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare for allegedly misleadingly advertising Benefiber Prebiotic Supplement as “100% Natural” when, according to plaintiffs, the company uses a complex, multi-step production process to turn wheat starch into wheat dextrin, the supplement’s only ingredient. In addition, the complaint claims that the company does not have adequate scientific evidence to support marketing claims that the supplement is clinically proven to “help you feel full longer” and “curb cravings.” Plaintiffs also claim that the product “nourishes good bacteria” when, according to the complaint, the supplement does not nourish any bacteria after it is absorbed into the body. (Angeles et al v. GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare L.L.C., Case No. 20-cv-6883, S.D.N.Y.)
