Saatva

TINA.org pulls back the covers on this company’s Made in USA marketing.

Many consumers view products that are made in America as higher quality, which may be especially important when shopping for something that you use every day – or rather, every night – like a mattress.

Enter Saatva, a bedding company that claims in the TV commercial above that its mattresses are “handcrafted and assembled in American factories.” The company doubles down on its USA marketing in Google search results, as well as in various sections of its website, stating that its mattresses are “Crafted in America,” “handcrafted to order in the U.S.,” “produced to the highest standard of American craftsmanship,” “Crafted in the U.S.A.” and “manufactured for you in America.”

However, Saatva’s mattresses do not meet the FTC’s standard for Made in USA marketing.

According to the FTC, in order for a product to be marketed as “made,” “manufactured” or “crafted” in the USA, the product must be “all or virtually all” made in the U.S. That is, it must contain “no – or negligible – foreign content.”

That’s not the case with Saatva’s mattresses. As the company inconspicuously discloses on its homepage and in the specification sections on product pages (see below), its mattresses are actually only assembled in America using globally-sourced materials.

In fact, in a recent blog discussing “new global trade tariffs,” the company warned that “some of the raw materials we use may be subject to price increases,” adding that “globally-sourced components – such as steel for coils, latex and fabric – used to assemble mattresses in America” are impacted by tariffs.

So far, Saatva’s Made in USA claims have not been challenged in court. However, the company has faced class-action lawsuits regarding other aspects of its marketing.

In 2024, Saatva agreed to settle a lawsuit alleging it engaged in deceptive pricing tactics to trick consumers into thinking they were getting a bargain and falsely advertised products as only available for a limited time. The company is also the subject of a pending lawsuit alleging it falsely markets products as nontoxic, natural and eco-friendly.

In response to a request for comment, a Saatva spokesperson said:

As Saatva’s website explains, Saatva’s mattresses are assembled in the United States using materials sourced from both the United States and elsewhere. We believe Saatva’s representations to this effect are consistent with FTC guidance. Nevertheless, Saatva is always looking for ways to improve its communication with consumers and will consider whether any further clarifications would be beneficial here.

Regarding the lawsuits and settlement, the spokesperson added, “While Saatva generally cannot comment on ongoing or settled litigation, we can say that Saatva intends to vigorously defend the pending cases and believes the claims asserted in those cases are without merit.”

The bottom line

In the past, the FTC has made companies pay for deceptively claiming that their products were “handcrafted” or otherwise made in America. While companies have every right to boast about their assembly plants in the U.S. that create American jobs and strengthen the U.S. economy, they are not allowed to deceptively embellish the amount of manufacturing that takes place domestically.

If buying American-made products is important to you, make sure to check for inconsistencies with a brand’s U.S.-origin claims before making a purchase.
