Junk Fees at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Airports
Why are these airport vendors slyly charging consumers for “employee benefits”?
If you’re looking to order food during March Madness, you may be enticed by Pizza Hut’s ad for a large, three-topping pizza with “your choice of Hut Crust” for $10.
But the company’s advertised price leaves out some important caveats.
For starters, despite Pizza Hut claiming that “the crust you crave” is only $10, the company reveals in the fine print that there’s an additional charge for its original stuffed crust and pan pizza. How much extra? The ad doesn’t say, but when we went to the company’s website, it was $3 more for original stuffed crust and $2 extra for original pan.
The fine print also discloses that the advertised price is higher in “some locations,” which TINA.org found could raise the starting cost from $10 to as high as $16.99 in states like Alaska and Hawaii.
Lastly, if you want this deal delivered, you may run into an unexpected cost that isn’t mentioned in the ad at all.
When TINA.org went to order, for example, we were told that we would have to purchase more than just one pizza – and spend more than $10 – to meet the store’s minimum delivery fee of $15, which did not factor in tax or a $5.59 delivery charge that was automatically added to our total.
Pizza Hut did not respond to a request for comment.
The bottom line
Don’t let the promise of a great deal prevent you from reading the fine print. And if you’re planning to eat at a restaurant and want to know how much it will cost, consider checking the prices online before going in person.
