A $49.95 Any Sewer or Drain

It’s a bold move to include a specific price for services you provide in the name of your company and then fail to honor that price.

Is bold the right word?

As a company name, A $49.95 Any Sewer or Drain doesn’t leave much to the imagination. But to eliminate any confusion regarding what the name means (or what the company wants you to think the name means), the NYC-based business states on its website that its offers “sewer and drain cleaning services for $49.95.”

If you still aren’t getting it, the number to call the company is 888-PAY-4995.

And yet, TINA.org recently received a complaint from a reader who was charged $275 for the company to clear a clog in his kitchen sink.

He’s not alone. Yelp is full of one-star reviews going back years from customers who say the company actually charges sometimes more than 10 times the advertised price of $49.95, otherwise known as a bait and switch.

Consumers have filed similar complaints with the BBB, which gives the company an F rating.

Meanwhile, some of the reviews featured on the company’s website don’t even seem to be for the plumbing business as they refer to car repairs and maintenance.

And while the company suggests that it has nearly 200 five-star Google reviews, an actual Google search for the company’s name reveals that it has only three Google reviews averaging one star.

A $49.95 Any Sewer or Drain, which we remind you is the actual name of the company, may also charge you just for sending someone out. The TINA.org reader who prompted this ad alert provided an invoice from the company with the following fine print:

If our mechanic cannot solve the problem due to broken pipes, full cesspools, lack of clean outs or city sewer two man jobs, a service charge of $50 will be charged to customer.

Stapled to the invoice in the top-left corner: the company’s business card prominently advertising the $49.95 price.

A $49.95 Any Sewer or Drain did not respond to TINA.org’s request for comment.
