In February 2016, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Family Dollar for allegedly deceptively marketing AMERICAN XT SAE 30 (an obsolete motor oil). According to the complaint, the store does not adequately warn customers that the motor oil does not protect and can damage modern-day automobiles. (Spann et al v. Family DollarStores, Inc. (d/b/a Family Dollar), Midwood Brands, LLC, and Dollar Tree, Inc., Case No. 16-cv-1080, D. NJ.)
