Ambit’s “Budget Billing” Plan

In June 2015, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Ambit Energy for allegedly marketing itself as less expensive than other utility companies when, in reality, Ambit customers end up paying more for energy. Specifically, the complaint alleges that Ambit promises that its budget billing program helps customers “avoid the highs and lows of the usual energy bill” when the program actually “mask[s] the company’s exorbitant energy rates” by failing to inform customers that the budget payments do not cover all of the amounts due and misrepresent the balance customers owe, as well as by adding additional charges to the final bills. (Lazarek et al v. Ambit Energy Holdings, LLC, Ambit New York, LLC, and Ambit Northeast, LLC, Case No. 15-cv-6361, W. D. NY.)
